Interesting Facts

Santorini is of volcanic origin and is actually an archipelago, a small group of islands, which is also called Thira by the Greeks. Thousands of years ago, several eruptions created a caldera (= a volcanic crater), the western edge of which has partially sunk into the sea. The crater was flooded and the main island, whose highest points on the cliffs drop up to 300 m, is crescent-shaped. The last volcanic activity took place in 1950.

If you look for Santorini on the map, you can find the small group of islands about 120 km north of Crete in the southern Aegean Sea.

Apart from the capital Fira, the little village of Oia (which is pronounced simply "Ia"), located at the northern end of the main island, is particularly well known. Thousands of people come here day by day to watch the sunset.

If you like sandy beaches, you will search in vain on Santorini, because most of the beaches consist of gravel or stones.

Best travel time

Santorini has the most hours of sunshine in Greece, with the highest temperatures measured between June and September.

This period is also the main tourist season. Daytime temperatures range between 25 °C and 30 °C and even at night it rarely gets cooler than 20 °C. At the same time the sea has pleasant 22 - 25 °C. However, also the months of April, May and October are recommended for a trip. Even if it is a bit cooler here and you may have to reckon with one or two rain showers, you are still in the off-season. On a tourist island like Santorini, this can be quite an advantage to avoid the big crowds. Also the hotel prices are lower at this time.

During the winter months of November-March, a trip to Santorini is less recommended, because here not only the weather is unstable, but also most hotels are closed.

My experiences

Santorini has been on my bucket list for a long time. There is a reason why the white houses with their typical blue roofs and the picturesque sunsets attract several million tourists to the small island every year.

In 2021, just in time for my 30th birthday, the time has finally come. Relatively spontaneously (only 4-6 weeks in advance) we booked our flight from Munich to Fira and then two different accommodations. Actually unnecessary in a one-week trip to change the accommodation, but we simply could not decide and so we just booked the two nicest hotels that we could find (and where the prices were not completely out of bounds).

If you want, you can easily pay € 10,000 per week for accommodation on Santorini. These are then mostly located in the small village of Oia and have their own infinity pools with direct views of the sunset. On the one hand, I would never spend so much money on a hotel, on the other hand, it has little to do with undisturbed idyll. As soon as the day comes to an end, Oia becomes the hotspot of the island and crowds meet there to watch the sunset. Right there, where all those expensive hotels with their, at first glance, inviting pools are located.

So we booked two lovely hotels, one located directly on the sea near Kamari, the other in the small village of Akrotiri on the southern end of the island.

Since this trip was, exceptionally, more of a relaxing vacation, we spent a lot of time at the beautiful pool facilities or by the sea. It is important to know that Santorini has mainly stone beaches, including the one in front of our hotel, which of course did not stop us from swimming in the sea. In June, when we were there, the water had about 22 °C.

But of course we also wanted to explore the island a bit and so we had booked a rental car with which we drove to the small towns of Fira and Oia. The distances on Santorini, which only has a north-south extension of just under 20 km, are very short, so you would have been fine here even with just a scooter.

Fira, the capital of the island, is located at the edge of the crater at an altitude of about 300m. From there we walked down the 566 steps to the old harbor. Back to we have then chosen the more comfortable alternative, the cable car. The town itself is characterized by its winding alleys, the beautiful view over the caldera and of course numerous restaurants, cafes and souvenir stores.

To Oia, the probably most famous place on the island, we have been twice. Already when entering the promenade, but at the latest when buying a scoop of ice cream for € 3.50, we noticed that this place is clearly more noble than Fira. Also the restaurants became more expensive here, the closer one came to the western end and thus the desired sunset observation places. We therefore decided to enjoy an early dinner with a view of the sea in a restaurant at the beginning of our excursion. We decided for a traditional meal (or at least what we as tourists considered traditional) and so we had gyros with pita and tzatziki.

Afterwards, of course, we followed the crowd to the sunset viewing point. On our first visit to Oia we were "only" about 1h earlier on site, which made the search for a place with a good view a bit more difficult. Therefore, the second time we came even earlier and had the perfect view.

My favorite places

Here I have put together some of my favorite places on Santorini.

Oia

The small village of Oia on the northwest end of the island is an absolute must-see, in my opinion.

However, you don't necessarily have to stay there overnight, as the accommodations here are very expensive.

The distances on Santorini are so short that you can easily reach Oia by car from anywhere.

If you want to be there for sunset, you should arrive at least 2 h earlier to get a parking space and a place with a good view of the sunset.

Fira

Fira is Santorini's capital and reflects the typical image of a Greek village.

Particularly famous are the so-called "Three Bells of Fira", part of a Greek church with blue domed roof and wonderful view over the sea.

Fira is not quite as crowded as Oia but still very touristic, characterized by many little stores and cafes.

It is also worth taking a detour to the old harbor, which can be reached either by stairs or by cable car.

Boat Tour

If you have a little more time on the island, you should definitely go on a boat trip.

There are numerous providers of boat tours that mostly start in the south of the island and then pass several beaches along the west coast.

These tours are especially beautiful at sunset.
